Can Extended High Frequency Thresholds Be Used To Detect Auditory Processing Difficulties In An Aging Population?

چکیده

Introduction Hearing impairment can profoundly affect people’s lives. It can lead to isolation and depression, lower quality of life and deteriorating relationships, particularly for older people [1]. An emerging concern relates to a subset of older adults who present with peripherally normal hearing but complain of persistent difficulties to understand speech in acoustically challenging environments [2]. This phenomenon is often referred to as “obscure auditory dysfunction” [3-5]. However, the term “obscure” is misleading, as it is estimated that this group make up an estimated 10-15% of all audiological referrals [6].

Background: Amblyaudia, a recent subcategory of auditory processing disorder, is characterized by asymmetrical auditory processing of an individual’s ears. Amblyaudia can result in speech comprehension difficulties, reading difficulties, information processing deficits, and inattention. These difficulties can be mistakenly attributed to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Specific L...

Objective Sensory processing refers to reception, adjustment, and integration of sensory information sequentially and generates adaptive responses. People need to have appropriate sensory processing abilities for functioning adequately in the environment and be able to participate in activities of daily living. Dunn's sensory processing model consists of two constructions. The first constructio...

Background & Aim: Auditory steady state response(ASSR) is an auditory evoked response that has received a lot of attention nowadays. At present, ASSR is mostly used to estimate pure-tone thresholds. Clinical evidence of ASSR in combination with findings for auditory middle latency response (AMLR) and 40 Hz response support the assumption that based on stimulus modulation rate, the ASSR anat...

Temporal Processing Evaluation in Tinnitus Patients: Results on Analysis of Gap in Noise and Duration Pattern Test

Introduction: Tinnitus is a perception of sound without external source. For complete assessment of tinnitus, central auditory processing abilities should be considered in addition to the routine psychological evaluation of tinnitus characteristics. Temporal processing is one of the important auditory skills that are necessary for complex higher level auditory processing.   Materials and Method...

High-frequency audiometry in young and older adults when conventional audiometry is normal.

UNLABELLED High-frequency audiometry can detect early changes in auditory sensitivity resulting from processes such as aging. Nonetheless its use is still limited, and additional studies are required to establish its use, particularly among older adults. AIM To compare pure tone thresholds for frequencies from 250 Hz to 16 kHz in young and older adults, with or without audiologic complaints. ...
